Pre-Nursing - (FETAC Level 5)

This course will be of interest to students who intend to pursue a career in nursing. Students receive a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of nursing care from essential nursing practices to specialised care. Development of practical skills and personal qualities is emphasized to equip students for further studies in nursing.

Students will be given the opportunity to observe direct nursing care and to participate in nursing care as part of the Work Experience module.

Nursing Assistant

Applicants must be 17 years of age and should have passed a Leaving Certificate Course. These requirements may be waived for mature students and for people who have experience in this area.

Additional Entry Requirements: A Science subject and/or relevant work experience.

Certification:

  • FETAC Level 5
  • Red Cross First Aid Certificate or
  • Occupational First Aid Certificate
  • Manual Handling (Course delivered by a Chartered Physiotherapist)


Further Study: Holders of this qualification may also apply for entry to courses in science and applied social studies in a number of Institutes of Technology through the links scheme.

Course Fees: No tuition fees. Students may qualify for grants from their local VEC. Registration and examination fees will apply.

Employment: Possible career paths: Include work as a Nursing Care Assistant or progression to further study of General Nursing, Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disabilities Nursing in a University or Institute of Technology.
