Student Supports

The school continues to develop strategies to support students and improve school retention rates. The school completion programme is organised under LINK (Learning Initiative North Kerry). A number of primary and post primary schools are involved in this initiative. LINK provides support for:

  • Subsidised food in the school canteen.
  • Subsidised transport to visit colleges, field trips and school outings
  • Extra tuition for students on a one to one basis.
  • Psychological Assessment to supplement the inadequate provision from NEPS.

The Access Programme, funded by the Higher Education Authority provides extra tuition hours, Gaeltacht Scholarships and extra supports to students who hope to proceed to higher education. Past students who are currently in higher education, ITT, UCC and TCD continue to benefit from the supports available under this programme. The school participated in the evaluation of Access Programmes in higher education organised by the Higher Education Authority during the year.

The school is involved in the DEIS Project (the action plan for educational inclusion). Under this programme the school has got extra Guidance hours and has also received entitlement to the services of a Home School Liaison teacher who will also be servicing another post primary and primary school. Arrangements are in place to have a teacher appointed in early 2007.

The school received an allocation of a full time Special Needs Assistant for behaviour class. Kerry Education Service and SENO provided additional resources including a special room and laptops for that programme. An additional teaching post is also provided to cater for this initiative. The progress of each individual student is monitored and recorded.
