The Hurt Locker: Movie Review

The Hurt Locker

An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever.

The Hurt Locker is a war film about a United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq War. The film was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and the screenplay was written by Mark Boal, a freelance writer who was embedded as a journalist in 2004 with a US bomb squad in Iraq. It stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty as members of the EOD unit and follows their tour of duty as they contend with defusing bombs, the threat of insurgency, and the tension that develops among them. Renner plays Sergeant First Class William James, a composite character with qualities based on individuals that screenwriter Mark Boal knew when embedded with the bomb squad. Mackie plays Sergeant J.T. Sanborn and Geraghty played Specialist Owen Eldridge.Filming began in July 2007 in Jordan and Kuwait some of the locations were less than three miles from the Iraq border.
