Childcare with Special Needs

Adult Education > PLC Courses > Level 6 Courses

This full-time course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in schools, childcare, social or community services. The regulation of the provision of these services, in order to ensure the highest possible standard of delivery, has created employment opportunities for graduates of this course in nurseries, creches, schools, pre-schools and childcare facilities in the public and private sector. Graduates may also progress to further study through the Istitute of Technology Tralee and a BA in Early Childhood studies through the special access programme. Students may also apply for Diploma/Degree courses in Great Britian and Northern Ireland.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 17 years of age or over as a rule and should have passed the Leaving Certificate. These requirements may be waived for mature students. All applicants will be interviewed.

Work Experience

This involves students working under direction in the childcare area.

Certification

Further Education and Training Awards Council.

Employment Opportunities

Successful students can expect to gain employment in a wide range of settings including nurseries, creches, pre-schools, early start centres and private homes.

Further Studies

After completing level 6, students may be eligible to apply for entry to:

Year 2 BA(Hons) UCC Early Childhood Studies
Year 2 BA(Hons) ITT Early Childhood care and Education

Course Fees

There are no tuition fees and the course is ESF funded. A registration fee will apply. Grants for the course are means tested. Students should apply to their local VEC office regarding eligibility.
