This full-time course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in Schools, Childcare, Social or Community Services. The regulation of provision of these services, in order to ensure the highest possible standard of delivery, has created employment opportunities for Graduates of this course in Nurseries, Crèches, Schools, Pre-Schools and Childcare facilities in the Public and Private Sectors.

Duration: 1 or 2 years
1 year: FETAC Level 5
2 years: FETAC Level 6: Childcare Supervisor

Applicants must be 17 years of age and should have passed a Leaving Certificate Course. These requirements may be waived for mature students and for people who have experience in this area.

Work Experience: This involves students working under direction in the Childcare area.

Examination Bodies:

  • Council for Awards in Childrens’ Care and Education (CACHE).
  • Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC).


Further Studies: Students may be eligible to apply for entry to:

  • Year 2 BA (Hons) UCC Early Childhood Studies
  • Year 2 BA (Hons) ITT Early Childhood Care & Education


Course Fees: No tuition fees. Registration and examination fees will apply.

Employment: Successful students can expect to gain employment in a wide range of settings including Nurseries, Crèches, Pre-schools, Early Start Centres and Private Homes.
